Niseko and Hakuba Unveil New Gondolas for 2024-25 Ski Season

Updated: Nov 19

Two of Japan’s premier ski destinations—Niseko Hirafu and Hakuba Iwatake—are raising the bar for ski enthusiasts with state-of-the-art gondolas debuting for the 2024-25 season. These upgrades promise not only faster and more comfortable rides but also a modernized experience amid Japan’s legendary powder snow.

Niseko’s Cutting-Edge Hirafu Gondola

Nestled in Hokkaido and famous worldwide for its unparalleled powder snow, Niseko Hirafu is unveiling its new gondola on November 30, 2024. Replacing the iconic Ace Quad Lift #2 Center 4, the new gondola features spacious 10-person cabins and a capacity to transport 2,800 riders per hour, a significant boost from its predecessor. With a speed of 6 meters per second, it is 1.5 times faster than the outgoing lift, ensuring shorter waits and more time on the slopes.

Highlights of the upgrade include heated synthetic leather seats, Wi-Fi connectivity, and indoor ski and snowboard racks for added convenience. A standout feature is the two premium cabins with transparent floors, offering stunning 360° views of the snow-covered mountains, turning every ride into a breathtaking experience.

Hakuba’s Iwatake Gondola Redesign

Over in Nagano Prefecture, Hakuba Iwatake Resort is unveiling its own transformative upgrade with a new gondola launching on December 20, 2024. Known for its spectacular views of the Japanese Alps, the resort is solidifying its reputation as a world-class destination with this cutting-edge lift system.

The 10-passenger cabins are designed for comfort, with generous room for gear and faster travel times to the summit. This improvement complements the resort's ongoing development, which includes plans for an international hotel at the base, promising a luxurious and seamless skiing experience.

La Niña Conditions Hint at a Stellar Ski Season

Adding to the excitement is the potential for La Niña weather patterns, which historically bring above-average snowfall to Japan’s ski regions. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency’s November update, while there’s only a 40% chance of a full La Niña winter, cooler sea surface temperatures (NINO.3 SST) suggest that the critical winter months could still see exceptional snowfall. This bodes well for Niseko, Hakuba, and other Japanese resorts renowned for their powder snow.

The season has already sparked anticipation, with early snowfalls in Hokkaido setting the stage for a thrilling winter. Whether it’s the promise of upgraded gondolas or the potential for record-breaking snow, the 2024-25 ski season is shaping up to be one for the books.
