A time to make a move for our seas and oceans

About 200 species of sharks and rays are going extinct. Should this occur, a negative and permanent impact on both the marine and human ecosystem will be irreversible.

Marine Wildlife Watch of the Philippines (MWWP), through the Save Sharks Network Philippines (SSNP) action plan, is to ensure that the Shark Conservation Bill is ratified into Philippine Law. It has currently been endorsed by Philippine Sen. Risa Hontiveros and by former Pres. Gloria Arroyo from Congress passing its first reading. We have to raise awareness and create buzz for the nation and most especially for those in government who will reject or approve this bill. We need to make a lot of noise. What better way to make a splash than a party.

RAROCO Insurance Brokers Inc. will mount the event and exhibit, Drink Like a Fish: For the Love of Sharks, will be mounted on November 9, 2018 at J Studio, La Fuerza Compound, Makati and is open to the public.

The main highlight of the Drink Like a Fish (DLAF) event is the special exhibit. For the first time in the Philippines, over 100 artworks of local artists, each representing different shark and ray species in the country will be presented at a fundraising art show. Over 50 established and up and coming artists were each assigned to make artistic renditions of 100 endangered species of sharks and rays. It is the only event in recent years that will show case the Philippine Seas as an important habitat for over 200 shark and ray species which ranks 4th globally next to Australia, Indonesia, and Japan. Proceeds will benefit MWWP in implementing shark conservation activities in the country. For those excited to get their dibs on the art works, there will be an Art Preview on November 6 to 8 during J Studio’s gallery hours.

Marketing collective Nomads Global Studios through The Nomads Travel Media supports this pressing social cause as the event’s official media partner. To support this environmental mission, you can participate in the conversation by joining The Nomads Viber Community or logging on to chats.viber.com/thenomads on your Viber mobile app. Here, you can ask questions about this urgent matter, know how we can help save our seas, and pledge their donations to Drink Like a Fish.

On event night, everyone is encouraged to bottoms up! Drink partner Destileria Limtuaco takes their key brands Mango Paradise Rum, Very Old Captain Dark Rum, Manille de Calamansi Liqueur, Amadeo Coffee Liqueur to create one-of-a-kind specialty cocktails themed to marine life quenching your thirst on your limited edition DLAF cocktail glasses, which you get to bring home. Your personal cocktail glass will be washed and refilled the whole night through staying true to going zero-waste and sustainability. No plastic straws, stirrers and other Earth-killer stuff.

Mother Earth may be our dominion, though we need to be reminded of stewardship over Our Home. Sustainability Talks by expert resource speakers are lined up for this cause.

3pm, “Don’t be Plastic!” by Anna Varona, founder of Clean Our Oceans Project: Anna gives tips and advice on how we can live a plastic-free lifestyle easily, and save extra in the process. To stop the production of plastic would be ideal, but realistically it exists and is a problem. She gives a run down of how plastic can be upcycled into eco-bricks and other functional items.

4:30pm, “Danjugan Island Experience” by Sef Carandang, VP for community development of Philippine Reef and Rainforest Conservation Foundation, Inc.: We can explore the wonders of the world with a lighter carbon footprint, and Sef is here to show how it is possible for one island to be preserved with an eco-tourism mindset. Danjugan Island is not a resort but a marine sanctuary.

6pm, “A Great White Lie” by AA Yaptinchay, founder & executive director of MWWP: We were brainwashed to forget that consumerism is something that generations of Earth inhabitants will pay dearly. And the cost is rising. AA shows expectation in conservation versus reality. But he presents us the beautiful possibilities of the things humanity can do and undo.

To top it off Pacific Cross Philippines will raffle a pair of annual travel insurance (grand prize) and a pair of one-trip travel to any Schengen Country (major prize) with a trip stay of 15- 30 days. Plus, Destileria Limtuaco will raffle three of their premium spirits. While enjoying a sumptuous vegetarian dinner buffet, move to live vinyl beats from Groove Nation, purveyors of topnotch sounds. For every ticket sold (Php 1,000), a portion is donated to MWWP. The November 9 event is from 3pm to 12mn. Be an angel, get your tickets in advance, deposit to RAROCO Insurance Brokers, Inc. BPI CA 3071-0719-94. Email deposit slip to info@rarocoinsurance.ph. Send full name, birthdate, email and cell no. Your e-ticket will be sent via text or email.

DLAF is produced by RAROCO Insurance Brokers Inc., spearheaded by its VP for Sales & Marketing and VP for Admin and Finance Denise Roco–De Leon, and is the maiden launch of the company’s CSR program in celebration of it’s 35th year in the industry. At same time, it is also the virgin launch of the Drink Like a Fish event series that serves as a fundraising/ benefit platform to support environmental non-profit organizations and their projects. The usual CSR activity is brought to a whole other level by conceptualizing tailor-fit events that achieve the chosen beneficiary's goals and objectives. Since it is supporting MWWP’s shark conservation campaign, this first event is dubbed “For the Love of Sharks.”
