The 2025 International Kermes Bazaar illuminated Madrid with a breathtaking tapestry of global cultures, unity, and heartfelt generosity—a spectacular event orchestrated by the International Association of Diplomats in Spain (AIDE). The latest episode of Home Away From Home with Carlo Velasco (Season 2, Episode 12) offers viewers an intimate look into this cherished annual tradition, where 31 nations converged for a vibrant day brimming with international cuisine, captivating cultural displays, and a shared spirit of solidarity.

Since its inception in 1984, AIDE, under the esteemed honorary presidency of Her Majesty Queen Sofía, has been a vital thread in Madrid’s international fabric. Originally known as “Asociación de Damas Diplomáticas” until its evolution in 2010, AIDE has consistently championed cultural exchange and philanthropic endeavors. Today, the association proudly welcomes diplomats of all genders and their spouses accredited to Spain, fostering integration, mutual support, and impactful charitable work throughout Spanish society.

AIDE’s annual Kermes Bazaar stands as its flagship fundraising initiative, with all proceeds dedicated to supporting Spanish charities. Yet, beyond its noble cause, the bazaar is a jubilant celebration of global diversity. Members from over fifty countries passionately share their heritage through enticing food stalls, intricate crafts, mesmerizing music, and captivating dance performances.


Mme. Poonam Patnaik, President of AIDE and representative of the Embassy of India, offer profound insights into the event's significance. She highlighted the special nature of this year's event: "This year is the 25th edition so it's a special one, basically celebrating a silver anniversary, and we have 31 countries participating... It's a very diverse [group of] countries coming together to celebrate our diversity and culture and food and gastronomy." She emphasized the collective effort involved, stating, "This kind of work entails a lot of commitment and passion, and I think with along with my board members... we are constantly striving to make a difference by choosing worthy causes and foundations which need our help."

The episode also features a delightful conversation with Mme. Rosa Icela Fuentes Chávez, Vice-President of AIDE from the Embassy of Mexico. "We are very happy to participate in this fair, which makes us feel what is being lived right now in Spain, in this beautiful place—the coexistence of so many cultures," she shared enthusiastically. Mme. Fuentes Chávez described, showcasing hand-embroidered bags, Frida Kahlo iconography, and traditional food. "So you can get a little taste of the flavor of Mexico," she invited, also mentioning the enticing tacos and refreshing margaritas available.


The episode further shines a light on the cultural performances, including a spectacular Filipino fashion show organized by Gil Albarracin, an entrepreneur collaborating with the Embassy of the Philippines in Spain. "We are proud of course to showcase our own Filipino designer Mr. Hector Gellangrain," Mr. Albarracin proudly announced. "His collections... [are] made of actually a hablon fabric and mixed with piña (pineapple fabric) and abaca. It's really beautiful, world class."

Adding to the rich tapestry of voices, Mme. Thi Ut Be Nguyen from the Embassy of Vietnam and a board member of the AIDE, shared her experience. She highlighted the extensive preparation involved in bringing together such a large and diverse event. Speaking about Vietnam's contribution, she explained, "We try our best to to promote our country's image through cultural performance with the bamboo flute performance and through food."
